Nabta Playa

  • Nabta Playa (c.4,800 BCE) means ‘Stone circle’ and is the only Megalithic Stone Circle in Egypt.
  • It is located 62 miles (100 km) west of Abu Simbel on the Tropic of Cancer.

Astronomical Observatory

  • The Site of Nabta Playa was active between 9,500-3,500 BCE and contains subterranean chambers.
  • Nabta Playa is the World’s first Astronomical Observatory, predating by over 1,000 years the Megalithic Temple Structures at Stonehenge in Britannia, Mnajdra and Hagar Qim in Malta.
  • However, the Site is contemporary with the Goseck Circle (c.4,800 BCE) in Germany.
  • At the Summer Solstice, the Sun’s Rays are directly overhead, casting no shadow.
