Newcastle Castle
  • Newcastle Castle is a Medieval castle built on the site of the Roman Fort called ‘Pons Aelius’ which guarded the bridge over the Tyne.
  • It has excellent views over the Tyne and the cathedral. The East Coast Mainline Railway runs under the walls of the Castle.

The Black Gate

  • The black Gate is a Barbican (fortified gateway) which is a approached by a wooden footbridge (which has replaced the drawbridge) across the moat.

East Coast Mainline

  • In the 1840’s the East Coast Mainline was built on a viaduct which cut through the castle grounds and which separates the Black Gate from the Keep.
