- Newington Roman Town is located in the town of Newington near Sittingbourne, in the County of Kent.
- It was discovered recently in 2019 whilst excavating the ground for a housing estate.
Roman Site
- Foundations of a Romano-British Temple
- Known as Watling Place Temple, the foundations are on open display beside the Watling Place housing development with an information board explaining the importance of the site.
- Using the original flints, the foundations were reconstructed 200 feet (70m) away from the original location.
History
- The site was found to contain the remains of a small Roman town, possibly the Roman station Durolevum on Watling Street.
- Amongst the excavations were found a 23 feet (7 m) wide Roman Road, a Roman Temple, evidence of a Roman manufacturing site, Roman Coins and Pottery.
- These date the site to as early as 43 CE, the date of the Roman Conquest of Britannia.
