  • Newington Roman Town is located in the town of Newington near Sittingbourne, in the County of Kent.
  • It was discovered recently in 2019 whilst excavating the ground for a housing estate.

  • Foundations of a Romano-British Temple
    • Known as Watling Place Temple, the foundations are on open display beside the Watling Place housing development with an information board explaining the importance of the site.

History

  • The site was found to contain the remains of a small Roman town, possibly the Roman station Durolevum on Watling Street.
  • Amongst the excavations were found a 23 feet (7 m) wide Roman Road, a Roman Temple, evidence of a Roman manufacturing site, Roman Coins and Pottery.
  • These date the site to as early as 43 CE, the date of the Roman Conquest of Britannia.
