Nicene Creed

  • The Nicene Creed, also known as the Creed of Nicaea, was a profession of Faith adopted by the First Council of Nicaea in 325 CE and signed by around 300 Bishops with only two abstentions.

Ecumenical Councils

  • It was the first of the ‘First Seven Ecumenical Councils’ between 325-787 CE which reached a consensus to establish a unified Christendom as the State Church of the Roman Empire.
  • They were all held in the East and summoned by the Roman Emperors, not the Popes, although these sent Legates.
  • It was then revised by the First Council of Constantinople in 381 CE.
  • It forms the basis of Christianity as practiced today by the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and most Protestant and Catholic Churches which are based on Nicene Christianity.
