Nisibis

  • Nisibis, today known as Nusaybin in Turkey, was one of the Roman Border Fortresses in Mesopotamia and the capital of Roman Mesopotamia.
  • It defended against the Parthian Empire, along with Dura Europos and Amida.

History

  • The Fortress controlled the crossing of the River Jaghjagh, which flows into the River Khabur, a tributary of the Euphrates.
  • Shapur I (309-379 CE) besieged Nisibis three times in 337, 346 and 350 CE, but each time the walls held.
