- Found mostly in Ancient Egypt, Obelisks are stone pillars set up as monuments, that have a square cross section and a tapered peak at the top.
- The Ancient Egyptians carved Obelisks to put in front of their Temples, and inscribed them with Hieroglyphs.
Obelisks of Ancient Rome
- The Romans were Impressed by the Obelisks they found in newly conquered Egypt, and in 10 BCE, Augustus brought two Obelisks to Rome.
- The Roman Emperors built huge vessels and had a total of eight Obelisks removed from Egypt and transported to Rome.
Caligula's Giant Ship
- Caligula’s Giant Ship was a huge vessel constructed by Caligula, to bring the Vaticano Obelisk from Egypt to sit on the Spina of the Circus of Nero.
Cleopatra's Needle
- There are three Egyptian Obelisks, each with the same name, Cleopatra’s Needle.
- Cleopatra’s Needle in London, Cleopatra's Needle in Paris and Cleopatra's Needle in New York.
