Optio

  • The Optio was a non-commissioned officer in the Roman Army.
  • He was second in command to the Centurion in the Roman Legion. If the Centurion was absent or killed, the Optio took command.

Description

  • One for each Century, a total of 59 in each Legion.
  • Second in command to the Centurion, and was appointed by him.
  • He would take command if the Centurion was absent or killed.
  • The Optio was paid double the Legionary Pay.
  • He marched at the rear of the century and enforced the Centurion’s orders.
  • British Army equivalent: Lieutenant.
