Pandora

• In Greek Mythology, Pandora was the first woman created by Hephaestus on the instructions of Zeus.
• In the Theogony, Hesiod wrote that Pandora opened a jar which introduced all the evils of mankind into the world, in a similar story to that of Eve in The Bible.

The Myth of Pandora's Box

• Zeus punished Prometheus for having stolen Fire from the Gods. He sent Pandora to Prometheus’ brother.
• Pandora carried a Jar which she was specifically told not to open (sometimes translated as a box).
• Pandora lifted the lid off the jar and War, Sickness, Death and Disease were released. Too late, she closed the lid, but Hope was left behind.

• To Open Pandora’s Box’ is a phrase which has come to mean ‘to release a series of problems that cannot be anticipated’.
