Pannonian Limes

  • The Pannonian Limes was a system of Roman Fortifications that formed the part of the Danube Limes that protected Pannonia (Hungary and Serbia).

Description

  • The defences consisted of a series of Roman Watchtowers, Legionary Forts and Fortlets that ran mostly beside the Danube, between Vienna and Belgrade.
  • There was no earth embankment due to the flood nature of the river, instead a Roman Road called the Danube Way, linked all the forts down to the Danube Delta.
