- Papyrus was used as a thick material to write on, similar to paper today, which was then made up into a Scroll or Codex.
- It was produced from the Papyrus plant in Egypt and Nubia from the fourth millenium BCE onwards.
Manufacture of papyrus
- The plant is the Cyperus papyrus:
- The inner pith from the stem of this plant is removed.
- This is then cut into thin strips and laid flat to form a sheet.
- Another layer of strips is then laid across them.
- The two sheets were soaked, then beaten together into one sheet.
- The sheet is then put under pressure to dry it.
- The sheet would then be rubbed smooth so that it could be written upon.
- Finally, it was cut into smaller sheets, which were glued together to form a Scroll.
