Parchment

• Parchment is made from Calfskin, Goatskin or Sheepskin, but is of a lesser quality than Vellum.

History

• Developed between 260-150 BCE in Pergamon, Greece, as an alternative to Papyrus.
• When the Library of Pergamun was created to rival the Great Library of Alexandria, Papyrus became too expensive.

Manufacture

• Parchment is manufactured in the same way as Vellum, by being immersed in lime, then having the hair scraped off, and finally being stretched out to be cleaned and dried. It is not Tanned.
