Philopappos Monument

  • The Philopappos Monument is a Roman marble mausoleum located on the Mouseion Hill in Athens, Greece, south west of the Acropolis.

History

  • Philopappos was a Roman Magistrate and Prince of Commagene. After his death in 116 CE, his sister and the Athenian townsfolk erected this Memorial, which commemorates his Grandfather as King of Commagene.

Description

  • First storey:
    • Philopoppos is carved in a Marble frieze, driving a Chariot dressed as a Consul led by Lictors.
  • Second storey:
    • There are three statues:
      • Left: Antiochus IV of Commagene, (Philoppos’ Grandfather)
      • Centre: Philopappos himself
      • Right: Seleucus I Nicator, Founder of the Seleucid Empire (now lost)
  • The Inscription:
    • ‘King Antiochus Philopappos, son of King Epiphanes, son of Antiochus’
      • (referring to Antiochus III and Antiochus IV of Commagene).
