Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Populo, Rome
  • This famous pedestrian square in Rome lies in front of Aurelian Walls at the Porta del Populo, originally the Porta Flaminia, where the Via Flaminia to Rimini started from. The Flaminio Obelisk stands in the square.
  • Looking south from the Piazza is view of a junction flanked by twin churches, which is the starting point of three straight streets known as the Tridente, that lead into three separate areas of Rome. This was the first view of Rome that travellers arriving from the north would see.

Getting There

  • The Flaminio Obelisk was transported from Egypt by Augustus in 10 BCE.
