Piranesi Candelabra

  • Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1779 CE) made three reproductions of giant candelabra from drawings he had made from Hadrian's Villa.

Description

  • They are now located in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
  • They are giant 10 ft (3m) high marble columns supported on a base, with ornamental motifs etched into the marble.
  • A flat top would have allowed a lamp or incense to burn.
