Pirates of the Black Sea

• The Pirates of the Black Sea were active between 17 BCE and 46 CE and were the Tribes of the Caucasus, the Heniochi, the Achaie and the Zygi.

Strabo

• Strabo called them the rulers of the sea, and Ovid exiled in Tomis between 8-17 CE, records them attacking the Danube Delta.
• The Pirates used small double-prowed vessels called ‘Camarae’.
• After their attacks they retreated to their Fortresses into which they hid their boats.
