- The Archeological site of Pompeii is the excavated area of the town of Pompeii which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is 15 miles (24km) southeast of Naples in the Campania Region of southern Italy.
- It was named by Sulla Colonia Cornelia Veneria Pompeianorum in c. 89 BCE, and was in Italia.
History
- It became a Greek city in c. 740 BCE who used its location on the mouth of the river Sarno as a convenient port.
- After 10 BCE, Pompeii received water from the Aqua Augusta, the Aqueduct which ran around the Bay of Naples and supplied all the towns and cities.
- Pompeii was buried under the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius during the eruption of 79 CE.
