- The Pons Cestius or Ponte Cestio, is considered to have been built between 62-27 BCE.
- It was the first stone bridge from Tiber Island to the Trastevere area.
History
- The origin of the name Cestius is unknown, although there may be a family link with a Roman magistrate called Gaius Cestius who built the Pyramid of Cestius between 18-12 BCE.
- It connects Tiber Island to the West Bank of the Tiber and the Trastavere area.
- The bridge spans one half of the Tiber, the other half is spanned by the Ponte Fabricio
- It was rebuilt in 370 CE.
- Between 1888—1892, during the building of the walls along the river embankments, the bridge was rebuilt and lengthened.
- Only the middle span is original.
