History

  • The origin of the name Cestius is unknown, although there may be a family link with a Roman magistrate called Gaius Cestius who built the Pyramid of Cestius between 18-12 BCE.
  • It connects Tiber Island to the West Bank of the Tiber and the Trastavere area.
  • The bridge spans one half of the Tiber, the other half is spanned by the Ponte Fabricio
  • It was rebuilt in 370 CE.
  • Between 1888—1892, during the building of the walls along the river embankments, the bridge was rebuilt and lengthened.
