Praefectus Urbanus

  • The Praefectus Urbanus, also known as Praefectus Urbi, was the Prefect of Rome, a position dating back to the Kings of Ancient Rome.
  • He was in charge of the City of Ancient Rome and up to 100 mile radius outside of its boundary.

Duties

  • The Praefectus governed through a system of managers called Aediles.
  • He was responsible for the Sewers, the Water supply and Drainage of the Tiber.
  • He regulated the Argentarii (Bankers).
  • He controlled the Cohortes Urbanae (city police), who had three Cohorts to police Ancient Rome.
