Prefectus Castrorum

Description

  • Unlike the Legate and the Tribunus Laticlavius, he was not from the Patrician class, but an ordinary Roman Citizen.
  • The Camp Prefect was a very experienced soldier, who had usually served as a senior centurion, Primus Pilus, and completed his 25 years service.
  • He was the Officer who drilled the Legion in peacetime, and advised the Tribunus Laticlavius in wartime.
  • In the absence of his two superiors, he would take command of the Legion.
  • British Army equivalent: Lieutenant Colonel, commissioned from the Ranks.
