Prima Porta Augustus

  • The ‘Augusta of Primaporta’, is a lifesize white marble statue of Augustus created in c.20 CE. It is one of the world’s most famous Roman sculptures.
  • It was found in 1863 at the Villa of Livia Drusilla (Augustus’ third wife) at Prima Porta, 8 miles (12 km) north of Rome.

Location and description

  • It is on display in the Braccio Nuovo wing of the Vatican Museums in Rome.
  • The statue is 6.8 feet (2.08m) tall and weighs 1,000 kgs.
  • The statue is thought to be a copy of a bronze original.
