Primus Pilus

  • The Primus Pilus was the commanding Centurion of the First Cohort in the Roman Legion
  • He was the most Senior Centurion in the whole Legion.

Description

  • After 25 years service, the Primus Pilus would often go on to become the Prefectus Castrorum, the third in command of the Legion below the Legate and the Tribunus Laticlavius.
  • During the Empire, there were 30 Primus Pilus’ who were promoted to the Equestrian Class every year.
  • British Army equivalent: Lieutenant Colonel, commissioned from the Ranks.
