Under the Roman Republic

  • Established in 275 BCE, under the Roman Republic, the Princeps Senatus was a senior and respected Senator from the Patrician Class.
  • He was voted in for a period of five years. Gradually, the Office acquired additional duties.
  • He led the Senate by deciding the timing, order, agenda and content of the Debates. He summoned and dismissed the sessions of the Senate, and on their behalf, wrote Letters and met foreign Embassies.
