Pyramidion

  • The Pyramidion is the capstone or apex stone on top of the Pyramids of Egypt.
  • The capstone consists of four equilateral triangles made from a polished limestone which originally had a coating of Electrum.

The Great Pyramid

  • The Apex stone on the Great Pyramid is missing, making it possible to walk on the flat top.
  • Diodorus Siculus (60 BCE) described the Great Pyramid as being without a capstone, so it was already missing during the Roman era.
  • Some sources suggest it may have been carved from black onyx and not limestone, whilst other sources say it may never have had a capstone.
