- The Quadrireme was a War Galley which was popular between 400-31 BCE and used during the Punic Wars (264-148 BCE).
Description
- The Quadrireme was based on the Trireme.
- Opinion varies as to its exact construction. It either had four banks of oars with one rower to each oar, or two banks of oars with two rowers per oar or simply four rowers per oar.
- They could carry large contingents of Marines, and Artillery in the form of Catapults and Ballistae.
- During the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage, both sides employed the Quadrireme.
Battle of Actium (31 BCE)
- At the Battle of Actium (31 BCE), Octavian‘s Fleet still had Quadriremes, although the Fleet consisted mostly of Liburnians.
- After this Battle the Quadrireme fell into disuse.
- During the first century CE, the Classis Misenensis at Misenum, had only 9 known Quadriremes.
- The Quadrireme was not present in Mark Anthony‘s Fleet which consisted mostly of Quinqueremes. During the first century CE, there was only one known Quinquereme in the Classis Misenensis, the ‘Victoria’.
