Quintilian

  • Marcus Fabius Quintilianus (c.35-c.100 CE) was a Roman Educator and Rhetorician who opened his own school and practised in the Law Courts.
  • He is famed for his work, ‘Insitutio Oratoria’, which has had a profound influence on Rhetoric, Literary Criticism and Educational Theory.

Biography

  • Born in Calahorra, Iberia, Quintilian was sent to Rome to study Rhetoric.
  • After Vespasian became Emperor in 69 CE, Quintilian opened a School of Rhetoric. One of his students was Pliny the Younger.
  • Quintilian was later made a Consul by Vespasian (69-79 CE).
  • His work was revived in the Medieval Period becoming influential again in the Renaissance of the 15th and 16th century CE. His followers included Martin Luther and Erasmus of Rotterdam.

  • Institutio Oratoria (c.95 CE)
    • A work on the Theory and Practice of Rhetoric in 12 volumes.
