- All Legionaries and Officers in the Roman Army wore a metal Helmet (Galea).
- It was part of the Roman Legionary Clothing and Armour.
Description
- The Legionary Helmet had a visor and cheek bands, and was similar to the cavalry helmet. It had a protective neck extension at the rear, and hinged protective cheek bands.
- The Centurion’s and Officer’s Helmets had a longitudinal red horsehair plume to make them recognisable in battle. They also had a protective neck extension at the rear, and hinged protective cheek bands.
Ribchester Helmet
- The Ribchester Helmet is a Roman Cavalryman’s ceremonial helmet, found as part of the Ribchester Hoard in 1796 CE. It is one of only three Roman Ceremonial Helmets with a face covering found in Britannia.
- These Helmets were used in cavalry tournaments known as ‘Hippika Gymnasia’.
- It is now located in Room 49 of the British Museum, along with the Ribchester Hoard.
