Roman Wall, Tower Hill

  • A section of the Roman City Wall is located in Tower Hill Garden next to Tower Hill Underground Station in London.
  • The Roman City Wall ran for 2 miles (3km) in a semi-circle between Blackfriars and Tower Hill.

Description

  • The Roman lower part of the wall is 13 feet (4m) high, with the rest being added during the Medieval period, reaching a height of 33 feet (10m).
  • It had 22 Towers with several Gates for the Roman roads to pass through.

Statue of Trajan, Tower Hill

  • A statue of Trajan was installed in front of the Wall in 1980.
  • Trajan (98-117 CE) is known in history as the greatest of all the Roman Emperors, who expanded the Roman Empire to its greatest territorial area whilst he was Emperor.
  • The statue is a cast of a 1st century CE Roman Statue that was found in Minturno, Italy. The original statue is now located in the National Archeological Museum Naples.
