Roman Room

  • The ‘Roman Room’ is a technique for memorising a large quantity of information without writing anything down.
  • The method consists of visualising objects along the four walls of a room and associating them with the information to be memorised. By recalling the objects, the information is recalled instantly, and is then easily reproduced.

Method of Loci

  • In Ancient Rome, this technique for memorising objects or speeches was known as the ‘Method of Loci’ (Loci means ‘places’ in Latin).
  • It is mentioned by Cicero in his work ‘De Oratore’, and by Quintilian in his work ‘Institutio Oratoria’.
  • Roman Orators could speak for hours without using notes.
