Saldae

  • The Ruins of Saldae are located in the port city of Bejaia in the Kabylia Region of northern Algeria.
  • The Roman seaport was located in the Province of Mauretania Caesariensis.

History

  • Saldae was founded in the 1st century CE and thrived as a minor seaport.
  • Between 439-533 CE, Saldae became the capital of the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa.

  • Vaulted Cistern Roof
  • Roman Arch
  • Hexagonal Stone Pillar (Cippus) (c.137 CE)
    • It is inscribed with the story of the construction of the aqueduct of Saldae.

Museums

  • Bordj Moussa Museum
    • Place du 1er Novembre, Bejaia. The Museum is currently closed whilst undergoing refurbishment.
    • The museum holds various collections including the Prehistoric and Roman periods to collections of African birds and insects.
