Saltstraumen

  • The Saltstraumen Strait is located in northern Norway close to the arctic circle near the town of Bodo. It holds the world’s strongest tidal current and maelstrom (whirlpool).
  • The Strait is 1.8 miles (3km) long by 490 feet (150m) wide beween Saltenfjord and Skjerstadfjord. As the tide changes every 6 hours, water races at speeds of up to 20 knots, to fill the 3 foot (1m) drop in height between the two fjords.
