Samosata

  • Samosata was the capital of the ancient Orontid Kingdom of Commagene.
  • It is now located next to Samsat, a town in the Adiyaman Province of southeastern Turkey.

History

  • Samosata was founded in 245 BCE by the Orontid King of Commagene.
  • It became part of the Roman Empire in 73 CE.
  • In 363 CE, the Emperor Julian (361-363 CE) built 1,000 ships and 50 pontoon ships at Samosata for the invasion of Parthia. The Campaign failed and Julian died from a wound on his return.
