Santa Maria Capua Vetere

  • Santa Maria Capua Vetere is a medieval town in Italy located adjacent to the important Ancient Roman city of Capua, and built around its Roman Amphitheatre
  • It is 18 miles (30km) north of Naples. The modern city of Capua was a town known to the Romans as Casilinum.

Roman Sites

  • Capua Roman Amphitheatre
    • It was constructed during the reign of  Augustus (27 BCE-14 CE).
    • It was one of the largest Amphitheatres in Italy and holds many similarities to the Colosseum, which may have been based on it, as both could seat 60,000 spectators.
    • Spartacus was a Gladiator in the Capua Roman Amphitheatre.
    • The Gladiator Museum is located next to the Amphitheatre.
  • Arch of Hadrian, a brick arch.
  • Roman Temple of Mithras with frescos.

      • It holds the Venus of Capua found in the Amphitheatre.
