Sappho

  • Sappho (c.630 – c.570 BCE) was one of the Nine Lyric Poets of Ancient Greece. She came from the island of Lesbos and wrote lyric poetry to be sung whilst accompanied by a Lyre.
  • The majority of Sappho’s poetry has been lost, with only one complete poem to have survived, ‘Ode to Aphrodite’.

  • The Greek Alexandrian scholars included Sappho in the canon of the Nine Lyric Poets.
