Sargon of Akkad

  • Sargon of Akkad (c. 2,334 – c. 2,284 BCE), also known as Sargon the Great, was the first Ruler of the Akkadian Empire (c. 2,334 – 2,154 BCE), with its capital at Akkad (now lost).
  • He conquered the Sumer Empire and created the Akkadian Empire which ruled Mesopotamia. He is not the same person as Sargon I (c.1,856-c.1,817 BCE) of the later Old Assyrian Empire.

Akkad

  • Akkad was the capital of the Akkadian Empire, but its location is now lost.
  • It may have been located to the east of the Tigris, between Samarra and Baghdad.
