Satala

  • Satala was the Legionary Fortress of the Legio XV Apollinaris between c.117-c.400 CE. It is now in the village of Sadak in Gumushane Province of northeastern Turkey.
  • It was in the Roman Province of Cappadocia until it was lost to the Persians in 607-8 CE.

  • Very little remains of Satala:
    • The outline of the Fortress walls
    • The arches of a basilica

Museums

  • British Museum
    • The museum holds the Satala Aphrodite (c. 1st century BCE).
    • This is the Bronze Head of a statue of Aphrodite which was acquired in 1873 by the British Museum.
    • It is on display in Room 69 of the Greek and Roman Department.
