  • The Scroll was the main form of book used in the Ancient World.
  • Ancient Libraries consisted of Scrolls until the 6th century CE.

Description

  • The Scroll was hand written.
  • Either Paper was used, made from Papyrus only grown in Egypt, or Parchment made from calfskin, goatskin or sheepskin when Papyrus was not available.
  • It had to be unrolled between two spindles and could be read vertically or horizontally.
  • Some scrolls were preserved inside cylinders known as a ‘Capsae’, usually made of beechwood.
  • Information took time to access and read.
  • The Scroll was eventually replaced by the Codex by the sixth century CE.
