- The Roman Senator was a member of the Roman Senate.
- The position was usually occupied by a Patrician, but a Plebeian could also become a Senator.
Description
- To qualify as a Roman Senator, they had to own land worth a minimum of 1,000,000 sestertii.
- This usually meant owning land in the form of huge estates known as Latifundia. Pliny the Younger stated that just six men owned all the Latifundia in Africa Proconsularis.
- During the Empire, the Roman Emperor would often promote members of the Equestrian class into the Roman Senate.
- In 218 BCE, a Law called the Lex Claudia was passed, forbidding Senators or their sons from owning Ships with a capacity of over 300 Amphorae.
