Seneca the Elder

  • Seneca the Elder (c.54 BCE-c.39 CE) was a Roman writer on Rhetoric.
  • He was the father of Seneca the Younger (4 BCE-65 CE ).

Works

  • The Declamatory Anthology (11 books) ‘Oratorum et Rhetorum Sententiae Divisiones Colores’
    • A work in ten books on fictitious lawsuits and one book on fictitious speeches of persuasion. It was written from his experience in the schools of rhetoric although he never practised law himself.
  • History of Rome ‘from the beginning of the civil wars’.
    • It is a history of the Rome from the start of the Roman Civil Wars until his death.
    • Although a lost work it has been partly preserved by Lactantius in Institutiones Divinae 7.15.14
