Servian Reforms

  • The Servian Reforms were made by Servius Tullius, the sixth King of Ancient Rome.
  • The Reforms produced a change in the voting structure of the Senate which sidelined the power of the Roman Aristocracy.

Voting Reform

  • Previously, laws and judgements were passed by the Comitia Curiata controlled by the Roman Aristocracy.
  • Servius created the Comitia Centuriata out of the ordinary population in Rome.
  • To do this Servius became the first Censor and created the first Roman Census.
  • The citizens of Rome assembled in the Campus Martius to register their Status, Property, Income and readiness for Military Service and were then assigned into groups of 100 men, a century.
  • The majority of votes in a century decided which way that century would vote. Each century then had one vote in the Comitia Centuriata.
  • This new body reduced the powers of the Comitia Curiata, and the Comitia Centuriata became the main legislative body.
