Shetland Islands

  • The Shetland Islands are an archipelago of about 100 Scottish Islands that lie 50 miles (80km) northeast of the Orkney Islands.
  • The largest island is called ‘Mainland’ and is the fifth largest island in the UK.

Archeology

  • The islands contain over 5,ooo archeological sites dating from the Neolithic Age to the Bronze Age.

Province of Norway (875-1472 CE)

  • The Norwegian King Harald the Fair Hair annexed the Orkney and Shetland Islands in 875 CE.
  • They remained Norwegian possessions until they were officially ceded to the Scottish Kings in 1472 CE.
