Sidonius Apollinaris

  • Sidonius Apollinaris (c. 430-489 CE) was a 5th century Gallo-Roman Statesman, Bishop and Author.
  • He wrote Panegyrics on the later Roman Emperor’s lives.

Biography

  • Sidonius was born in Lyon. His grandfather was a Praetorian Prefect of Gaul.
  • He became a Prefect of Rome in 468 CE and later he was Bishop of Clermont Ferrand.
  • He is one of four influential Gallo-Roman Bishops in the 5th century CE whose works have survived. The others were the Bishops of Vienne, Limoges and Pavia in Italy.
