Signalling Method with Five Flags

  • The Roman Five Flag Signalling Method used two rigs of trestles side by side.
  • Each rig had a set of five poles with red flags at their ends.

Description

  • The poles were hinged and combinations of one to five poles could be easily tilted up.
  • A similar rig set up some distance away would receive and transmit in response.
  • For night signalling torches were used.
  • For numerals a sixth pole could be added.
  • To read the signals the Polybius Square method was used.
