Silbury Hill

Silbury Hill is a flat topped circular pyramid or mound, constructed in the Bronze Age around 2,450 BCE. It is the highest man-made Monument in Europe at 131 ft (40m).

Description

Similarity to Egyptian Pyramids

  • Silbury Hill has a similar size and volume to the Pyramids in Egypt.
  • Although the mound is covered in grass today, excavations have shown that underneath the earth is a cone shaped step-pyramid made of chalk and having ten sides.
  • It would originally have appeared as a shining white edifice.

Function

  • Silbury Hill has been found not to contain any Burials, and its purpose is the subject of debate.
