Statio

  • The Statio was a Way Station or Post placed at set intervals along all the major Roman Roads of the Roman Empire.

The Stationarius

  • It was manned by the Milites Stationarii, who were Roman Legionaries, temporarily seconded from a legion, to police the roads of Italia and of those Roman Provinces  which had no legions.
  • A Stationarius would be temporarily assigned to a specific station on a specific road, eg, ‘Stationarius Via Appia’.
  • The first inscription mentioning a Stationarius dates from the reign of Trajan (98-117 CE).
