Tapete Britannicum

  • The Tapete Britannicum was a Woollen Carpet from Britannia.
  • This was exported as a luxury item to Rome.

Description

  • Diocletian's Price List (301 CE) fixes the value of two kinds of woollen rugs, the Tapete Britannicum, one priced at 4,000 Denarii, the other at 5,000 Denarii. As wages for a day’s labour varied between 20-50 Denarii per day, these woollen goods can be seen to have been expensive.

Birrus Britannicus

  • This was also known as a ‘Cucullus’, and was a woollen cape with a hood, from Britannia.
  • It was worn by the Britons and used by the soldiers on Hadrian's Wall.
  • A Birrus Britannicus was priced at 6,000 Denarii in Diocletian's Price List.
