Teak

  • Teak is a hardwood tree that grows in the Tropical Forests of Kerala in India, as well as in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Burma.

Shipbuilding

  • Teak is a hardwood that has properties that make it resistant to weather and rot.
  • For this reason, it has traditionally been used in shipbuilding, as it makes durable boat decks for vessels such as the Dhow and Chinese Junk.
  • Fragments of Teak have been found in 2,000 year old buildings excavated in Berenice, Egypt, suggesting that perhaps the ships of the Red Sea Trade during Classical antiquity were partly built using Teak.
