Temple of Mercury

• The Temple of Mercury in Baiae (c.100 BCE), was also known as the Temple of Echo due to its acoustics.
• It had the largest Dome in the Ancient World, at 71 ft (21.5m), until the Pantheon was completed in 128 CE.

Baiae

• The Spa Town of Baiae had become very popular with the Roman Senatorial class under the Roman Republic.
• Many Villas with their own Baths were built here from 100 BCE onwards.
• The ‘Temples’ of Baiae were actually Baths, several of which had Domes.
