Third Illyrian War

  • The Third Illyrian War (159-167 BCE) was part of three wars known as the Illyrian Wars (229-167 BCE) between the Roman Republic and the Illyrian Tribes on the coasts of modern Croatia, to protect Rome’s Eastern Frontier.

History

  • The Third Illyrian War took place between Rome and King Gentius of Illyria, a Roman ally, against King Perseus of Macedon.
  • When King Gentius changed sides and sacked the cities of Appollonia and Dyrrhachium, who were allies of Rome, the Roman Consul L. Anicius Gallus was sent to defeat him.
  • King Gentius was brought back to Rome where he was displayed as a prisoner in a Roman Triumph by Gallus.
