- Tongeren is a cathedral city on the river Geer located in the Flemish Region, also known as Flanders, of northeastern Belgium.
- It was the Roman town of Atuatuca Tungrorum in the Province of Germania Inferior.
History
- It was originally the capital of the Roman District of Civitas Tungrorum in the Province of Gallia Belgica.
- In 69 CE It was burnt during the Batavian Revolt.
- Between 80-83 CE it was absorbed into the newly created Province of Germania Inferior.
- Tongeren was located on a crossroads of the important Via Belgica which connected Britannia with Cologne the capital of Germania Inferior. Roman roads connected it to other Roman cities.
