Totila

  • Totila, also known as Baduila, was the King of the Ostrogothic Kingdom between 541-552 CE. His predecessor was Theodoric.
  • After a one year siege, Totila conducted the Third Sack of Rome in 546 CE and carried off the population.

War with the Byzantine Empire (535-554 CE)

  • The Byzantine Empire eventually invaded Italy and took the Ostrogothic capital at Ravenna, deposing King Witiges in 540 CE..
  • The Ostrogothic Kingdom continued to resist under King Totila between 541-552 CE, from his new capital at Pavia.
  • By 554 CE Italy had come under Byzantine control, with the exception of certain cities which resisted until 562 CE.
